This summer, Riverside County Regional Park and Open-Space District participated in Coca-Cola’s “America’s Favorite Park “ campaign for a chance to win a $100,000 recreation grant. RivCoParks employees, family and friends rallied together to earn votes for Rancho Jurupa Park as it competed with nearly 12,000 other parks nationwide. That awesome support took Rancho Jurupa to the top of the leaderboard, earning it a 6th place ranking.
The five week campaign of voting – each vote required logging at least 20 minutes of physical activity and “checking in” at the park – helped Rancho Jurupa Park make it to the top ten. Part of the goal of the campaign was to increase physical activity throughout communities and encourage healthy lifestyles. Participants voted online every day, exercised and visited Rancho Jurupa Park with the aspiration of helping it win the title of “America’s Favorite Park” in addition to grant money that would fund park enhancements. Rancho Jurupa may not have earned the title of “America’s Favorite Park,” but with all those votes it may be safe to say it is Riverside County’s favorite park.
First place went to Veterans Memorial Park in Moore, Oklahoma, a worthy winner after a tornado destroyed the park earlier this year. At the end of the campaign, a total tally of 1.4 million votes and 72,000 hours of physical activity were logged. Although Rancho Jurupa Park missed the cut for the $100,000 prize, finishing 6th place among the nation and inspiring the community to be active and spend more time outdoors is an amazing achievement.
